こんにちは。みくです。今日は北海道の冬の暮らしについて紹介します。
Hokkaido is one of the snowiest and cold regions in Japan, so there are many customs that may surprise people outside of Hokkaido. In this article, I will introduce two of them.
北海道は、日本の中でも雪が多く降り、とても寒さが厳しい地域で、道外の人には驚かれる習慣などが多々あります。今回はその中から二つ紹介します。
First, I'd like to write about the temperature inside the house. Houses in Hokkaido are designed to be more resistant to the cold than ones in other regions. For example, houses have double-paned windows and good heating systems. Hokkaido has the coldest city in Japan, but the inside of a house in winter is the warmest in Japan. As a result, kotatsu, which is a typical feature of winter in Japan, is rarely seen in Hokkaido. (Kotatsu is a traditional Japanese heating system which is a table and a heater combined as one piece of furniture. The blanket covers the outside of a table to trap heat and keep you warm.)
まずは、家の中の温度についてです。北海道の住宅は、他の地域の住宅と比べると、窓が二重になっていたり、暖房器具が充実していたりと寒さに強い家づくりがされています。その為、日本で1番寒い街もある北海道ですが、冬の家の中の暖かさは日本一です。でも、日本の冬の風物詩である“こたつ”は、北海道ではあまり見かけません。（“こたつ”とは、日本伝統の暖房器具です。ヒーター付きの机の外側を布団で覆うことで、熱を閉じ込めて暖かくする仕組みになっています。）
In regions that are relatively warmer than Hokkaido, kotatsu is popular because it is more efficient to heat a part of the space rather than the whole room. I've never been in a kotatsu, but when I told this to my friends from outside Hokkaido, they were very surprised.
北海道よりも比較的暖かい地域では、部屋全体を温めるよりも、一部の空間を温めた方が効率が良い為、普及されているようです。私は今までこたつに入ったことがないのですが、この話を道外の友達にすると、すごく驚かれました。
Next is the sand box. There are many bags of sand inside it.
次は、砂箱です。中には袋に詰められた砂がたくさん入っています。
These bags can be taken out freely by anyone, and the sand is spread on slippery road surfaces to prevent slipping. This seems to be something unique to snowy Hokkaido, and most people who have moved here from outside of Hokkaido do not know about it. Once the road surfaces freeze, they become as slippery as a skating rink, so sand boxes are set up everywhere in winter. There are various shapes and sizes of sand boxes, and some of them look like this.
これは、誰でも自由に取り出すことができ、凍った路面に砂を撒くことで、滑りにくくします。これは雪の多い北海道ならではのもののようで、道外から引っ越してきた人は知らない人が多いです。一度路面が凍ると、スケートリンクのようにツルツルになってしまうので、歩道など滑りやすいところにすぐにまけるように、至るところに設置されています。色々な形の砂箱がありますが、中には、こんな形の砂箱もあります。
It's a panda sand box! This sand box is not common, and according to my research, there are only five of them in this shape in the district where I live. If you can see one, you might be lucky.
なんと、パンダの砂箱です！この砂箱はあまり見かけることができないもので、調べてみると、私が住んでいる区には、この形は5つしか設置されていないようです。もし見かけたらラッキーかも！？
